Common questions about UK dental indemnity

Plain-English answers to the questions dentists, hygienists, therapists and nurses ask most about indemnity and insurance cover.

Do UK dental professionals need indemnity insurance?+

Yes. The General Dental Council (GDC) requires every registrant, dentists, dental hygienists, therapists, nurses, technicians and clinical dental technicians, to hold appropriate indemnity or insurance for the full scope of their practice before treating patients in the UK.

What is the difference between discretionary indemnity and contractual insurance?+

Discretionary indemnity is provided by a mutual or defence organisation that decides case-by-case whether to support a claim and is not regulated by the FCA as an insurance contract. Contractual insurance is a regulated policy with defined wording, so the cover you pay for is the cover you receive provided the claim falls within the policy terms.

How much does dental indemnity cost in the UK?+

UK dental indemnity typically ranges from around £400 a year for a dental nurse or hygienist to £2,000–£8,000+ a year for a private dentist or specialist. Premiums depend on your role, clinical scope, NHS/private mix, claims history and whether the cover is contractual or discretionary.

What is run-off cover and do I need it when I retire?+

Run-off cover protects you against claims that arise after you stop practising for treatment you carried out while insured. It is essential for claims-made and contractual policies because dental claims can be brought years after treatment. Discretionary schemes usually offer ongoing assistance for past acts at their discretion instead.

What is the difference between occurrence and claims-made cover?+

Occurrence cover responds to incidents that happened while the policy was in force, no matter when the claim is brought, so you remain protected for past work even after the policy ends. Claims-made cover only responds while the policy is active, which is why run-off cover is needed when a claims-made policy is cancelled or you retire.

Which dental indemnity providers operate in the UK?+

Major UK dental indemnity and insurance providers include Dental Protection (MPS), the Dental Defence Union (DDU/MDU), MDDUS, BDA Indemnity, All Med Pro, Densura, Taylor Defence Services (TDS), the Dental Defence Society (DDS) and Professional Dental Indemnity (PDI). Cover models, claims handling and pricing vary between them.

Can I switch dental indemnity providers mid-year?+

Yes. You can change provider at renewal or mid-policy, but check that historical work is still covered, either through occurrence/run-off arrangements with your previous provider or by purchasing nose cover (retroactive cover) from the new one before you switch.

Does dental indemnity cover GDC fitness-to-practise investigations?+

Most UK dental indemnity providers include dento-legal advice and representation for GDC fitness-to-practise investigations, inquests, NHS performance hearings and complaints, alongside cover for clinical negligence claims. Always check the policy wording or member terms for limits and exclusions.

How are the premium estimates on this site calculated?+

Estimated premium ranges are derived from publicly published rates, provider literature and anonymised submissions from UK dental professionals. We never invent numbers, where data is thin or sensitive to underwriting it is labelled as indicative, and final terms always come from the provider.

Is this dental indemnity comparison tool free to use?+

Yes. The comparison tool is free for UK dental professionals, requires no account and does not share your details with providers unless you choose to request a quote. Featured commercial partners are clearly disclosed and do not affect the objective comparison methodology.
